London has always been a global financial centre. The City boasts more variety of international financial institutions and investors than any other centre including New York, Hong Kong, Singapore and Dubai. We’re the number one exporter of financial services across the world, with a trade surplus of £63 billion in 2018, up from £61 billion in 2017 (source: ONS Pink Book 2019).

London is the foreign exchange capital of the world- the global leader in US dollars, Euros, Japanese Yen, and the largest RMB clearing house outside of Greater China. We are home to countless world leading FinTech, insurance, asset management, green finance and consultancy companies.

To maintain this advantage, the City Corporation engage with important global markets to attract financial institutions to come to London and to transact business through London.

The City of London Corporation prioritises engaging with important global markets, including those in Asia, to boost two-way investment between Asia and the UK, and to contribute practically to financial policy and reform. Asia accounts for most of the world’s GDP growth, and continue to shape the world in important areas of finance, currency and infrastructure. The City of London is well placed to support the UK’s financial sector offering through our relationships with key stakeholders across Asia, the work of the Special Adviser for Asia and the City of London representative offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Mumbai.

The Asia team goal is to secure London’s future as the most global financial centre, building opportunities for trade and investment with Asia, leading on Asia policy and regulatory thinking to facilitate market access, and creating platforms for Asia-focused business growth in London. The Chair of Policy and Resources Catherine McGuinness and The Rt. Hon. the Lord Mayor William Russell are senior figures for this agenda.
