Description

The project involves the construction of a large new hospital building and the refurbishment of existing buildings. Due to the complexity of the project, it has been necessary to schedule the works across three main phases with the final building consisting of a nine storey wing including a basement and an adjacent energy centre.

Our role

The District Surveyor's Office provided the full building control function from pre-application advice to completion. Throughout all phases of the project we provided extensive guidance and assistance to the project team. Our flexible approach has ensured that each phase of the works achieves compliance with the relevant provisions of the Building Regulations while also being considerate of the sensitive nature of the hospital environment.

Particular issues included the fire engineering and mechanical and electrical aspects. The atrium which is a feature of the building required specific attention as a fire engineered solution was proposed and then agreed on with us. Accessibility requirements are critical in hospitals and we worked closely with the project team to ensure these standards were met. Our dedicated multi-disciplined local team stayed with the project for over 10 years, ensuring consistency of approach.

If you are contemplating doing work on a new or existing medical facility, we are happy to assist you with any Building Regulation queries you may have and offer free pre-application advice. Please call 020 7332 1000 or email the District Surveyor's Office.
